About the Artist
Canadian artist Nikki Toews (formerly Nikki Strohschein) has been creating art from the time she could hold a crayon. In her early years, her medium of choice was graphite pencils because of their simplicity and ease of use. Originally from British Columbia, Nikki developed a great love for animals and wildlife and spent much of her free time drawing the creatures she loves.
Eventually Nikki began experimenting with different colored mediums: first pastels, then watercolors, and eventually acrylics.
In 2005, Nikki entered the "Get To Know" national art contest with her "Peregrine Falcon" acrylic painting, which won her honorable mention. At the awards ceremony she was honored to be able to meet her long time hero, Robert Bateman - world famous wildlife artist. She entered the contest again the following two years, and in the final year that she could enter the contest, she was chosen as one of the winners in her age category with her "Robin Fledgling in Cherry Tree" acrylic painting. The award earned her painting a featured page in a calendar and a chance to again meet and talk with Robert Bateman.
Nikki currently lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba with her husband. In her free time, Nikki enjoys spending time in the outdoors hiking, camping, and getting inspiration for her art.
